A unique camera program is being welcomed by area business owners who are sick and tired of crime. Local business improvement districts received the grant from the borough president, then they chose busy and unprotected areas in their commercial district to implement Operation Safe Shopper.
The goal of the pilot program is for businesses to set up cameras outside their stores to help deter crime. Business owners will be able to register the outside cameras with a local precinct, and monitor it with their mobile device.
Borough President Eric Adams says $2,500 will go to business improvement districts to help pay for the installation of cameras outside. Each new set of cameras, which record the street around them, will be registered with the NYPD, Adams said, helping police to more quickly collect useful footage of crimes and potential perpetrators.
Two businesses on Albany Avenue in Crown Heights were chosen by the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council.
